Morena Cardoso has an experimental practice for women (cisgender, transgender, non-binary) that understands dance and movement as a somatic narrative, invoking a body that creates positive ruptures, visits new subjectivities, which affects and is affected by sensibilities that encourage new ways of living. She has an audience of 100k followers on Instagram. The gathering aims at providing a space to experiment with the body and the dance to create an alliance between spirituality and critical thinking. By employing analytical tools to understand the reality in its several dimensions, we encourage changes not only in the subjective, individual level, but also in the concrete and collective levels to transform the modes of production and reproduction of life.
I started the below painting of her in 2019 and had made plans for 2020 that were postponed for the obvious reasons. This January I plan to go to the Brazialian Rain Forest to create a new, much alreger painting of Morena performing with er red ribbon. Morena is currently working with a long piece of deep red fabric that she wears, unravels and makes fly with dance. The ribbon is still partially abstract Morena as she continues to work it out through movement. She knows the ribbon represents a line of pain and creation felt by all women but is continuing to discover its meaning.
I’ll be bringing a small film crew consisting of my videographer Laurel Jollie and an audio technician TBD to shoot episode 3 of “no dark place” for Patreon. The episode will follow me and Morena as while we discuss the meanings behind the her work, influences of traditional dances and ideas for the future. We’ll meet local cultures, hear their stories, eat at their tables and maybe even dance some myself. All the while I will be painting a large canvas inspired by all my experiences with Morena and Brazil.
