I fell in love with Jane Goodall as a child. As my first heroin, I was attracted to her fierce gentleness and undying curiosity. She introduced me to a primate society in the jungle that seemed so much more civilized than the adult world I was headed for in human civilization. I compared the ambient stories of war, pollution and inequality overheard from news and adult conversations with this gentle narrative of Jane and her gorilla families. They live closely and most importantly connected, by an unseen awareness of their connection. To communicate they constantly remain aware of the position, posture and movements of the other’s in their clan. They remain aware of everyone’s emotional state. It was a hopeful dream to watch beings tend to each other so lovingly, without pause. Adulthood didn’t change this conversation in my head much. Humanity looks more like savages capable of great destruction through ignorance every day. I’ve decided that humans are the most capable creature on this planet not the most civilized. Is civilization really defined by tall buildings/so-called greatness or is it happiness? I’ve sat with the gorillas in the Bronx Zoo drawing them many times. When I draw an animal I spend hours and sometimes days with them. The gorillas taught me to see without my eyes. They approach with their side turned not looking directly in your eyes. It would be threatening to look you straight in the eye and sometimes mean real violence. They want to feel you first. Using the side of their face and body they feel your posture with their skin. They smell your breath and body odor. They use their eyes but only the peripheral vision at firs.t They can see your full body better in the peripheral vision. When you look directly at a person in close proximity you only see the parts you look at. Their image of you is composed of so much more than sight.
I think the awareness to combine all our senses to form ours visions and an empathic intelligence is important evolutionary step for people.
